About PDF to Markdown
PDF to Markdown (pdftomarkdown.run) is a free online tool that converts PDF files to clean Markdown entirely in your browser. No uploads, no account required.
What we do
We help developers, researchers, and knowledge workers turn PDF documents into structured Markdown ready for LLMs, RAG pipelines, Obsidian, Notion, and other tools.
Our converter preserves headings, lists, nested bullets, and tables while stripping page numbers and repeated headers so the output is clean and token-efficient.
Why we built it
Most online PDF converters require uploading files to a server, which is a dealbreaker for contracts, internal reports, and research notes.
Existing tools often produce messy Markdown that breaks tables and wastes tokens when fed to language models. We built PDF to Markdown to solve both problems: keep files on your device and produce output designed for modern AI and note-taking workflows.
How it works
When you drop a PDF, parsing and conversion run locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your file is never transmitted to our servers.
We use Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity only to understand general site usage, not to access your documents.
- 100% local PDF processing in the browser
- No sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit for single files
- Works offline once the page is loaded
What's next
We are actively improving conversion quality and adding capabilities based on user feedback.
- OCR support for scanned and image-only PDFs
- Batch conversion for multiple files
- Higher-fidelity formula and table handling
- A developer API for automation and RAG pipelines
